Make Sure It's Pure

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

There are several ways to determine if an essential oil is pure:

  1. Check the label: Look for oils that are labeled as "100% pure" or "therapeutic grade." Avoid oils that are labeled as "fragrance oil" or "perfume oil" as they may contain synthetic ingredients and lack the therapeutic properties of pure essential oils.

  2. Look for certifications: Some organizations, such as the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) and the Alliance of International Aromatherapists (AIA), certify pure essential oils. Look for oils that have been certified by these organizations.

  3. Research the company: Look for a company that has a reputation for producing high-quality, pure essential oils. Research the company's sourcing and distillation methods to ensure they use sustainable and ethical practices.

  4. Check for batch numbers: Many essential oil companies now include batch numbers on their products. This will allow you to trace the oil back to the source.

  5. Smell the oil: Pure essential oils will have a strong, characteristic scent. Synthetic or adulterated oils will not have the same smell. However, this method is not always reliable as some adulterated oils may smell similar to the pure oil.

It's important to note that not all companies will have these certifications or batch numbers, so it is always recommended to do your research and check the reputation of the company before purchasing any essential oil.
